What You Need to Know Ahead of U.S. v Google

September 6, 2023

Here’s a few nuts and bolts on the trial how it will work on a day-to-day basis:

Trials will typically run 9:30 to 5:00, with short breaks at 11:00 and 3:00 and lunch from 12:30 to 1:30. Fridays will be half days, so Judge Mehta can attend to time-sensitive criminal matters on his docket.

There will be no court on September 25, September 29, October 9 October 13, October 20, October 23, or October 25 due to federal holidays, religious holidays, and pre-existing court obligations.

The front two rows of the galley will be reserved for the hoard of lawyers working on this case. You can bring your electronics into the courthouse, but they must be TURNED OFF when you go in the courtroom. There’s a big sign on the door reminding you of this, and you’ll also get a reminder from Judge Mehta’s clerk.

They will do their best to minimize sealing the courtroom. The lawyers have been given a complicated outline for what order to ask questions, so the courtroom will only be closed once per witness. That being said, Google indicated that it will want the courtroom sealed for the entirety of some witnesses’ testimony. We’ll see if that happens.
